Are Dental Veneers Permanent?
Dental Veneers are such a fascinating part of dentistry and the great part is that anyone can get them! Not just celebrities and people with a lot of money! They can change the way you smile as well as the way that others look at you since the smile is the biggest contributor of aesthetics on the face.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental Veneers are a coating of filling material or porcelain that is placed over the front side of the tooth in order to change the tooth’s colour, shape and general appearance to become more appealing.
Often enough we see celebrities getting dental veneers over all of their teeth which changes their smile’s colour and shape within hours. These celebrity veneers often cost a lot of money due to them being porcelain. Porcelain veneers are made by the laboratory to layer the porcelain and create the colour and smile which you want.
What Is The Process To Get Dental Veneers?
First you’ll need to go to your dentist for a consultation for them to plan how your dental veneers should look. Your dentist should discuss the options with you, ask about what you want changed with your teeth and take a variety of photos to communicate with their laboratory.
Your Dentist should then communicate what the cost will be before proceeding and run you through the process of getting dental veneers which usually entails placing trial veneers to see if you like your smile or not and to do any changes to the trial smile.
Once you are happy with your trial smile your dentist can then start to prepare your teeth by removing a little bit of the tooth’s top layer to make space for the porcelain. You will go home with a set of temporary veneers while the laboratory creates the real deal veneers.
The laboratory usually takes around 1 to 2 weeks to create your porcelain veneers. Once the porcelain veneers are made you’ll have to get them glued onto the top surface of your teeth. This is a long appointment requiring great isolation of teeth so that the veneers are not extremely sensitive afterwards.
Are Dental Veneers Permanent?
To an extent, yes, dental veneers are permanent because they are glued onto the front surface of your teeth with extremely strong adhesive dental glues. However, these dental veneers can be removed by use of drilling them off or using a laser to remove the glue under the veneers if someone wants to remove their permanent dental veneers and replace them.
There is an option of getting trial dental veneers to test out how the dental veneers will look on you but they only last a few days then start to chip and break off of your natural tooth.
Composite veneers (filling material veneers) are often easier to remove than porcelain veneers! This is important to remember since porcelain veneers need to be replaced every 10-15 years where composite veneers can likely be patched up every few years.
